President's Message
I hope all you PRiSM members had wonderful summers and are fully entrenched in the world of Fall Sports. Thank you to those who reached out and joined committees since the annual meeting half a year ago (seems like yesterday). A lot of work has been done over the intervening months that are streamlining our society’s work flow into the future (from recommended changes to bylaws to a revised financial plan to help secure our future endeavors). All of these will be highlighted in Columbus at the 2025 Annual meeting.
One of the biggest changes is the work done to “Get the RIGs Right.” Starting mid-October, leadership will be having meetings with all the current RIG chairs to start detailing what changes are being made and how these improvements will be implemented. This will then trickle down through the RIGs themselves and the society at large. The goal will be to implement those changes at the Annual meeting. In fact, the Program committee is setting aside over 4 hours of time to help detail the changes to the society and still have time for us all to meet in person for our RIGs to discuss our projects. Change is always hard, but your leadership is excited to introduce the new RIG structure which will allow for more membership involvement and no loss of participation because you “rolled off” a RIG. Exciting times ahead!
Another big change is related to the Awards committee, which is detailed elsewhere in this newsletter. But, I am willing to share that the awards related to the presented research has been streamlined to make each award more meaningful- and there is a newly named award! Moreover, the local and national awards nominated by the membership have been revised to more accurately reflect the spirit of PRiSM. There are now two nominated awards that will be given for “Education and Mentorship” as well as “Community Service and Outreach.” The Awards committee looks forward to reading about all the awesome things our membership has been doing, so start considering who you might nominate when the call goes out.
Last, but certainly not least, is the fantastic progress that Co-Chairs Joseph Janosky and Jonathan Napolitano have made in the plans for our Annual meeting in January 2025 in Columbus, OH. The 12th Annual meeting of PRiSM will no longer have a pre-course, and the actual meeting will start on Thursday morning. I personally plan on arriving the night before so that I do not miss anything in the program, as they have some amazing ICLs, podium presentations and a fantastic keynote speaker lined up for you (but you won’t get any spoilers from me). The transition sessions for the RIG changes will occur Thursday afternoon (as well as the RIG meetings), so you will want to be sure that you are in Columbus before lunch (if you do not have the luxury of getting there Wednesday night like me).
Thank you for being PRiSM and I look forward to seeing you all in Columbus,
Eric Edmonds, MD FAOA - President
New Awards Structure!
The Awards committee in conjunction with the PRiSM board and presidential line, has adopted a new Awards structure based on feedback from the 2023 Annual meeting and the membership survey. There are now 7 awards open to all PRiSM members. Four of the awards will be based on podium and poster presentations at the Annual Meeting. They include: Hank Chambers: Best Scientific Paper; Min Kocher: Most Promising Career; Kevin Shea: Best Scientific Poster; and the newly named Cordelia Carter: Inclusion and Equity Award. Dr. Carter has championed diversity and inclusion throughout her career, as well as serving as the first female president of PRiSM. As an organization we greatly appreciate her guidance and innovation.
In the spirit of diversity and inclusion, PRiSM has added 3 awards that represent the ideals of PRiSM and its mission. They include:
- Education and Mentorship: nominated by PRiSM members
